Out After All These Years

We have it easy these days. More and more of the population is accepting of same-sex relationships, and there are plenty of support services available for anyone who identifies as queer. But it wasn't always this way; in the past women have kept themselves in the closet because they feared losing their job, alienating their families, or risking their very life. Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, founders of the Daughters of Bilitis, have been together for more than 50 years and out for nearly that long. But 75-year-old Mary Lou Fuller and her partner, 73-year-old Kay Amsden, are finally out after 25 years in the closet.
