Sex Workers Right are Women’s Rights are Human Rights

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

This week is the Desiree Alliance Conference. This is a sex worker activist group, and the conference brings together people from very diverse backgrounds, including health, public policy, law, accounting, and the arts. Yesterday morning the opening keynote speech came from Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former US Surgeon General. Belle du Jour made a presentation about maintaining privacy. She maintained anonymity and separation of identities for something like seven years, starting as a blogger and ending up with a book deal and Showtime series based on her books. She’s very sweet and we chatted at dinner and at the bar.

There are also a lot of male sex workers and trans sex workers here. I know exactly one male sex worker (former) so it’s really great to meet the rest of the movement. There are a lot of sex work allies and professional supporters, such as lawyers, accountants and clergy. There are several activist organizations, leadership development, health care organizations and even some sort of temple from Sedona. It’s really exciting. I will be posting more about the issues throughout the week.
