Thanks to the Bay Windows newspaper I learned about a new travel option for women: LezCruise. They are a travel agency that coordinates groups of women on straight cruises. Although RSVP and Atlantis, both full-charter lines, allow women to be part of the group, the number of women on board is frequently well under 10% of passengers. The only option for an all-female cruise so far has been Olivia, which is rather expensive and so not everyone can go. LezCruise is much closer to the Pied Piper model in that they do not charter an entire ship - which drives fare up quite a bit - but rather bring groups onto straight cruises. Unfortunately the ones they’ve got so far are mostly on expensive cruise lines (Crystal, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas) and only one on a moderately-priced line (Holland America). But they have a message board on the site, along with a blog, and hopefully they will turn into a great company with lots of women on board!

I’ve been on two cruises with Olivia will soon leave for my third in a few days. You are right they are more costly than going on a a non-gay cruise. I have never heard of LezCruise. Do they have activities or dancing for just the lesbian’s on the ship? I’ve danced with my partner on straight cruises, endured some stares, but also received compliments on how well we dance as a couple. However we do not feel the sense of freedom as a couple as you do on an Olivia cruise, holding hands or kissing in public places. Then I think it’s time to push the envelope and let hetero’s know we are all around.
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:52 pmHi there - I’m Lis from LezCruise. Meredith, thanks so much for writing about us on your blog! kj - we are just about brand new which is why you’ve never heard of us. We don’t actually organize any activities per se on the cruises. We provide a website where lesbians can find other lesbians who are cruising. There are forums so that people can chat with each other pre cruise, and plan whatever activities they would like. We’re not adding any markup to the cruise prices and you don’t even have to book your cruise through us, though we’d love it if you did. Mainly though we want to provide a place for women to find each other. And I think with more women on the ship, we would all definitely feel more comfortable dancing and holding hands, etc. That was definitely true for us when we cruised with 2 other lesbian couples last fall.
