Network Update

While I’ve been enjoying my week off between holidays, the CyDy Network staff has been busy! There are new updates at Sappho’s Girls, Serafina Sox, Posteriority, and a new Cyber Dyke Special!

Lesbian Health at Risk

There’s an opinion column in the Windy City Times (that’s Chicago) that indicates the recent same-sex marriage bans passed in many states across the country are putting lesbian health at risk. The part of the column that scares me the most is the mention of a lesbian couple who listed each other on their powers of attorney and health proxies…and the hospital still won’t let the well one visit the ill one. These women live in a small town in Virginia, and I live in Virginia too. I’m in a much more liberal part of the state - the state voted red overall, but my area voted blue - but that doesn’t mean I’m in any better situation if myself or my partner gets sick. The column also mentions good parts of the situation - there are lesbian cancer support groups springing up around the country. The Mautner Project is a national organization focused on promoting lesbian health through a variety of services, research, and education.

Country Club Fined for Discrimination

The Druid Hills Country Club, located in Atlanta, has been fined for discriminating against a lesbian member. Like many country clubs, they offer spouses the opportunity to become members - but they wouldn’t let Lee Kyser’s partner join. The mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin, fined the club $500 per day - up to $90,000 - until they change their policy. The city has an ordinance that allows fines and/or business or liquor license removal for businesses who discriminate, even private entities like a country club. What shocked me most, though, was that Kyser is one of two gay members of the club, which has more than 1,000 members. Surely there must be other members who are still in the closet!

Yet another reason (as if we needed another!) to love AfterEllen.com: they’ve just announced the results of their first annual AfterEllen.com Visibility Awards! There aren’t really any huge surprises - The L Word wins Best Scripted TV Series, t.A.T.u. snags Worst Musical Group or Performer - but it’s still a nice little collection of awards. There’s presumably no weight to these awards yet, but perhaps in a few years they will inspire screenwriters and performers to improve their portrayal of lesbian and bisexual women.

Pursed Lips

I just found a very interesting blog, thanks to Tristan Taormino’s new blog. Debra Hyde has been writing Pursed Lips since 1999, and in addition to being very prolific she is also a highly intelligent writer. She writes about sexuality, especially the kinky kind, and adds in a little bit of politics now and then.
