HRC Director Ousted

Considering that they are the largest gay rights organization in the United States, it strikes me as strange that the Human Rights Campaign seems to have so much trouble. Their most recent director, Cheryl Jacques, has been relieved of her post after only a year on the job. Why does HRC continually need new directors? It surprised me to learn that Jacques was making $200,000 while working at the organization. I know that running such a massive enterprise requires someone with a lot of skill, but it is a nonprofit organization. Couldn’t there be some altruism on the director’s part?

Some of the listings are geographically specific, such as the lawyer in California, but others are for online services that could work globally. The directory is still pretty small (many categories have no records listed) but it looks like it will be a good resource when it grows.

Vermont/Virginia Saga Continues

The story of two-year-old Isabella Miller-Jenkins continues, with an appeals brief set to be filed in Virginia on December 8th. The story began when Isabella’s birth mother, Lisa Miller-Jenkins, broke up with her partner Janet Miller-Jenkins. Lisa moved with Isabella from Vermont, where had a civil union, back to her home in Virginia, which has some of the strictest anti-gay laws on the books. (Gays here can’t have any legal contract that confers the rights of marriage.) As Janet and Lisa fight over her, Isabella is growing up in a world of torment…I can only imagine what Lisa is telling her about Janet. Meanwhile, Janet is missing out on the important steps a toddler takes as she matures…it’s all a very twisted story.

Civil Unions in New Zealand

It looks like New Zealand just might become the next nation to allow a form of legally-recognized partnership for same-sex couples! The country’s Civil Union Bill is being rushed through Parliament, and although there are groups who vehemently oppose the bill, there are even more people who support it. Those in favor of the bill even took out an ad in the Sunday Star Times and is circulating the advertisement in poster form to members of Parliament. Hopefully by the end of 2004 we will know which way New Zealand decided to go!

The crowd at the Eagle last night was mostly men, but there were a few women there, and the Eagle does offer a Dyke Night. There’s an entire community of leatherdykes online, though, at LeatherDyke.com! It’s completely non-commercial, and it’s for women only. There are several hundred kinky women participating in the forum, and there is also an e-mail discussion list that’s been running since 1997. Membership is free, but it is a closed space; there’s a page describing membership criteria and you should either be recommended by a current member or request an interview with an administrator in order to join.
